1.4 the making of the leaflet and analysis- draft analysis

Draft Analysis- First Idea

In the first draft of my leaflet I have quite a cartoony theme in or to make it seem like the Southbank is a happy place so that it will stick out and be contrasting to the other leaflets that are also on the shelves as they are usually a bit dark, look strange or are just boring. I have used the London Eye as it is very iconic of the Southbank Centre therefore people will know what the leaflet is about straight away. The title is “the Southbank” but is continued to be “in the Heart of London,” in order to show how the Eye is at the Centre of British culture. I have also added some symbols of Britain such as the Red Bus and the Zebra crossing in order to enforce the point of British culture. There is also a heart rate monitor line going round the edge in order to enforce the fact that the Southbank is in the heart of London.

This is middle of the 1st draft of my leaflet. I have lots of text on the left side in order to give the reader lots of information about the Southbank (SB). The title, which is “THE SOUTHBANK A HIVE OF EXCITEMENT,” is there to make the reader want to read more about the SB and find out why it is a hive of excitement. There is an advertisement on the leaf side of the leaflet for a competition of some kind, which makes the reader want to get involved more. The image of The London Eye in the corner is for continuity from the front and the image of a girl with a street entertainer shows how the SB is a happy place.

This is the back and it is very basic in order to give a simple feel to the Southbank however at the same time there is the head of Charlie Chaplain sitting on top of the IMAX which is like his collar which is a bit mind boggling however it still looks effective. I have used this specific typography in order to appeal to the younger audience as it is exclaiming colloquial language. I have put my made up company name at the bottom in order to give a bit of a sense of professionalism with the leaflet and also to make it look a bit more complete.

Second Idea

This is my second idea for the leaflet and I think that it looks or will look more professional than my 1st idea as there is a main image, a few small side images and then also a simple but effective title. The title is at the top in order to show that it is very important together with the Tron bike and the BFI logo. The main image is effective because it is of a happy looking Mickey Mouse (which is actually a street performer) standing with a happy looking Asian boy. This shows the ethnic diversity of London and in particular the Southbank. I have used some decorations in order to fill in the blank space and also to make it look busier.

This is the middle of the second draft of the leaflet and I think that it will look very effective when and if I use this draft in my final leaflet. The main title which is on the left side shows what the double page spread is about. The three exclamation marks after “THE IMAX,” shows that The IMAX is exciting and fun. The main image in the leaflet is of the IMAX itself in order to further show what the double page spread is about as some people may have not hared of or seen the IMAX. I have the word “FILM” in order to fill in the spaces and also to show that the IMA is all about films as it has the biggest screen in Britain. On the right side is information about the Southbank itself and also a few reviews of a couple of the films which are shown in the Southbank to give the reader a further idea about the style of films which are shown in the IMAX.

This is the back of the leaflet which doesn’t look as good as the front or the middle as it looks a bit messy and won’t be suitable for people of all ages which is my target audience. The title shows that there is “even MORE,” in the SB than the IMAX which is the impression that some people may have got from the middle of my leaflet. There is a weird looking smiley face at the top to show how the SB is very different from any other place in the world. I have added a small review of many of the other major places to see in the SB in order to give the reader a wider feel of what the SB is. There is also a website at the bottom so that the reader can get more information if the want.

Idea 2 Coloured

I have chosen the second draft of my leaflet and have now added the colours. It is now looking more professional and the colours work well together. The title is now black with yellow shading behind it in order to make it stand out. I have chosen a blue and red colour scheme in order as there is a lot of contrast between these 2 colours. I have also added a bit of black in order to crate even more contrast and in order to make Mickey Mouse look very different. He is wearing a suit and tie in order to make him look very different from usual which shows how the SB is different from usual. His tie and the clothes of the boy are also the blue and red colour scheme for continuity. The decorations are the fade in the specific colours in order to show that there is a lot of art in the SB.

I have chosen the second draft of my leaflet and have now added the colours, which look very effective especially on the IMAX as they make it look a bit 3D or like it is coming out from the page. The decorations made from the word “FILM” are now aligned in order to give a sense of organisation in the SB and also to make it look more uniform. I have used the blue and red colour scheme on this part of the leaflet for continuity and also to make the leaflet more alive than just a normal one coloured background. On the right I have now coloured the images from the films and have added some blue and red decorations to make the leaflet look busier.

I have chosen the second draft of my leaflet and have now added the colours. I have now made the text boxes look more presentable and have put a better looking frame around the edge. I have also coloured the boxes in order to the different feels so that they are not all the same. I have also coloured half of the weird smiley in blue and half of it red in order to show the cultural diversity and the massive amount of things to do in the SB.

The Front - Photoshop drafts

This is my 1st draft of the leaflet, which I have made on Photoshop. I have decided to do a black background as it looks very different from many of the leaflets, which are currently in the SB at the moment. I know this as I have gone there and I have collected many leaflets myself. The title fades from blue to white in order to make it stand out from the background a lot. Behind the title there are some stars which I have made out of an image of the London Eye. I was going to use the London Eye as my main image however I thought that it would look too much like some already existing leaflets and I would like my leaflet to be very different from these ones. I have put “JAN- MARCH 2010” as this is the time frame, which I would like people to come to the SB. I have used an image of the Tron bike from an advert for the film Tron. This looks very effective and gives the leaflet a slightly futuristic feel. I have used an image of a young Asian boy posing with a street performer however the street performer is in a Panda costume however it still looks effective as I have made the eyes blue together with the boy’s face for continuity. I have made his once colorful jumper black and white in order not to distract from the colour scheme. I have also added some blue decorations, which are of various speakers and sound waves in order to show the very exciting atmosphere of the SB but also so that the leaflet appeals to younger people as many young tourists go to the SB.

This is my second draft and I think that there is a massive difference from the 1st draft. The main difference is that the title is bigger to show that it is more important and also that many o0f the important things have a yellow glow around them to maker them stand out from the black background. I have also added the IMAX logo which is normally this coulor underneath the Tron bike in order to show that the film Tron is shown in the IMAX. I have also changed the main image to one of a young girl and the original Mickey Mouse idea that I had. I done this because the girl is attractive therefore more people are likely to pick up the leaflet and then read it than if it was the old image of the panda and boy. I have used a blue gradient in order to change the normal colours of the girl and street entertainer into the kind of turquoise-blue colour scheme, which I have in the other parts of the front of the leaflet. I done this also because when it was in normal coulor it stuck out from the background too much and looked like a different style to the background. For the decorations in the place of the many different brushes which have a speaker theme I have put only 2 in a vivid yellow colour so that there is more yellow on the leaflet because without it only the outer glows on the different images is yellow. I also chose yellow because it has more contrast with the black background then the same brushes but in blue.

Before I done the third draft I done a survey to ask people what they thought that my leaflet needed in order to look more effective or professional. I noticed that when I asked someone who done some sort of art or worked on Photoshop they said that it was fine as it was and that I shouldn't change it. I also found that the other people, who were the people that weren’t really visual artists, thought that it needed more colour in order to come alive more because at the time it looked too flat or 2D. I personally thought that it looked finished however the people who I asked could be in my target audience therefore I listened to them and changed my leaflet to make it more colourful. Also my teacher who is very visual decided that it looked very good however it did look a bit 2d therefore I should add more colour therefore this is what I have done for the front cover. I only done this to the front cover as at this stage I had only done the front cover and decided that I wouldn't do the middle or the back until it was nearly done so that I could fully establish a suitable style so then I could do them quite quickly.

This is the 3rd draft of the front cover of my leaflet. The only changes that I have made except the colours are the that there are rays of light coming down from the top right hand corner, I have made the main image of Mickey Mouse and the girl bigger and that I have added some more speaker brushes in the bottom left hand corner. The rays give the effect that the SB is something almost heavenly or magnificent. These fade out into the black background so that there is a smooth transition between the red and the black. If the red just ended then it would make it look a bit more amateur and it wouldn’t fit in with the style of the piece. I have put in two more speaker brushes so that there are four therefore I can use the new colour scheme of red, light blue, purple and green more. I have made this my new colour scheme as it creates a sense of carnival and also it makes the cover a bit more varied which greatly contrasts to my last draft. I have used this colour scheme with the title, the BFI logo and the IMAX logo. All of this creates a great sense of continuity and also crosslink’s between the different images in on the front of the leaflet. I have made the image of the Mickey Mouse bigger to make it seem more important and also to make the cover seem more crowded to show how bustling with life the SB is. I have made it normal colour so that it fits with the rest of the colour but also because when I done a survey of what I needed to do to the leaflet to make nit look more professional many people said that this image should be in normal colour as it would be better if we clearly saw the girls face and also the actual details of Mickey Mouse. I also took the yellow outer glow off of this image so that it sticks out from the others because if there were too much outer glows then it makes the images seem less important as everything has one.

The Middle

This is my 1st draft of the leaflet, which I have made on Photoshop. Doing the middle of the leaflet was very hard as it was very hard to find a suitable picture therefore I spent a long time on this and then found that this picture would be most suitable even though I would have to edit it a lot in order to get rid of the iPhone advert on the front. There is a black background in this middle section of the leaflet for continuity because there is also a black background on the front however the black is very effective as it makes all that is put in front of it seem more important as there is a high level of contrast between it and then anything else which is out in front of it. Another use for the black is to fill the empty space because if it was white then it would look empty and look like it would need to be filled but then the middle pages would look too busy which may discourage the reader from reading it. I have placed four images from very different films onto the left side so that I can write about them but also to show the reader an example of some of the genres of films which they could see in the Southbank. They and the text boxes are angled in this way in order to give a sense of freedom and unrestraint, but also to make my leaflet seem very different from most of the other leaflets which are trying to portray the same message. I have used the colours which I have for the title for continuity as red and blue are my colour scheme on the front cover and also the font is the same because it creates a sense of continuity and also it is very professional.

This is my second Photoshop draft and it immediately looks much better than my first draft. The main differences in this draft are that I have added yellow outer glows to the text boxes and main image and also that I have positioned the text boxes and images horizontally which is the way which we normally read therefore it will be easier for the reader to read the text. The organisation is also better as the text boxes are put in such a way that they fit together better therefore I can make them bigger in order to put in more text. This will be an asset because I will be able to give the reader more information which could make them want t come to the Southbank even more and also the organised feel portrays a sense of professionalism. I have used a yellow outer glow because yellow is a bright colour which has connotations of happiness and joy therefore it is portraying the message that the Southbank is a joyful place and therefore a good place to be. It’s visual advantage is that it makes the image of the IMAX stand out more as the edges of it used to be black which is the same colour as the background therefore there was little contrast.

This is my third Photoshop draft of the middle of the leaflet and it is now looking quite professional however it is still partially unfinished. After trying to edit the iPhone advert off of the IMAX but still keep the metal structure on the outside of the IMAX for a long period of time I decided that I was not working productively enough therefore I decided to move onto the right side of the leaflet whereupon I found an image of Batman with bars coming down in front of him looking over a city which I eventually decided to use to layer over the exiting image of the IMAX. By doing this I cut out a lot of work and at the same time created an effective looking image of the IMAX which is also useful because it fits with the blue/ red colour scheme therefore I did not need to edit it much. On the right side of the leaflet I have added some film reviews into the boxes so that the reader can get an idea about the type of films which are shown in the Southbank. I have chosen the selection of films which I have in order to show that there are many different genres of films all suitable for different ages which are shown in the IMAX therefore the overall target audience of the IMAX is everybody. I have also added some decorations along the edges in order to frame the text boxes and images which make the page look more busy which represents how busy the Southbank really is. They are not very big so that they don’t distract from the main focus of this section which is the image of the IMAX and the reviews and also they are in the theme colours which are blue and red for continuity.

The Back

Of the three parts of the leaflet; the front the middle and the back, the back was by far the easiest to do as there was a specific brief for what was supposed to be on the back and also because of the generally slow which I have been working at most people are way into the production of their back cover therefore there is a lot from which I can be inspired and given ideas about my own back cover.

This is my 1st draft of the back cover on Photoshop and at first glance it looks quite effective however at the same time it looks very unprofessional especially because of the stars. At the top is the title which is “THE SOUTHBANK,” which is in quite a large block font to make it stand out more and therefore seem more significant/ important. It is also in the theme blue and red colours of my leaflet however this time the text itself s not blue and red but rather it is red and white with a blue outer glow in order to slightly vary the design but keep the same elements. I have kept the same constant black background for continuity but also to create a high amount of contrast with the red stars and their blue outer glows. I have made the stars go down diagonally in order to give a sense of organisation as the stars are not everywhere but then at the same time they are in small strips which look effective. I have also given the text boxes a blue outer glow to make them stand out from the background and then a red inner glow in order to keep the red and the blue together which they are all of the other parts of this cover. The box at the bottom is different in size and alignment to the other boxes because unlike the other text boxes it will a box of directions to the Southbank whereas the other boxes will be a short summary of what goes on in the different main attractions in the Southbank.

This is the second draft of my back cover and it is a great improvement from the last draft as the title has been changed and also I have taken out the stars together with all of the red and blue inner and outer glows. I have changed the title and the whole top section to a more red and turquoise colour as these are the same two colours that I have used in the theme for the middle and the front sections. I went against the red and white title because there was not enough continuity with the middle section. I have also added a yellow outer glow in order to create more contrast between the title and the background especially with all of the autumn decorations around it. The gradient which I have used for the title is effective because it gives all of the letters a uniform look and as there is a smooth transition between the colours it still looks professional. This is because on professional leaflets the letters, in a word especially the title usually all of the typography is one colour and it is never one colour suddenly changing to another. I have now started adding in the reviews of some of the main places in the Southbank in order to give the reader some information on what they can actually do in the Southbank besides going to the BFI IMAX. Around the text boxes I have added a yellow outer glow in order to make them seem not so sharp but also to make them stand out because everything around them is busy/ exciting. The colour yellow is very suitable for this use as I have not used it anywhere else on the back cover therefore it will stand out more and also this is my theme. By this I mean that in most situations if something is important then I have given it a yellow outer glow throughout and this applies to the whole leaflet e.g. the image of the IMAX in the middle or the title on the front cover.

This is my third draft on Photoshop and there has been much improvement from the last draft. The major thing which I have done in order to make the leaflet look more professional is take out the big white decorations which were taking up too much space therefore meaning that there was not enough space for the images of the institutions themselves (which I have not added in yet). They were also not in any way in the colour scheme however even when I put them in the colour scheme by making some of them red and some blue they still looked out of place and unprofessional. In the place of them I have added some garden like decorations above the text box which gives directions to the Southbank. These are more suitable as they are not taking up space which is going to be used for anything else. I have used various brushes in order to create this garden like scene and also a leaf brush in order to create the leaves at the top. On this page I have made all of the decorations symmetrical in order to make the leaflet look more attractive but also to give the feel that the blue and the red are opponents like the good and the bad. This is shown by the fact that there is basically a mirror line in the middle of the leaflet and the decorations on each side are a mirror image of each other. At the bottom of the garden decorations there is a yellow strip which is like the soil in a way but also to show that yellow is the same on both sides of the mirror therefore it is constant even throughout the rest of the leaflet as the thing that is symbolic of importance/ significance. I have now added the directions to get to the Southbank e.g. by bus, train, bike or walking. Next to the directions there is a map of the Southbank which the reader can use in order to help find their way around the Southbank which is good because it may make their time in the Southbank better as they are less likely to get lost. I have now added to the title in order to make it “And that’s not all that the Southbank has to offer. There’s more!!!” I have added this because after reading the middle page the reader may think that the IMAX is the main place to visit in the Southbank therefore I am showing them that “There’s more,” in the Southbank meaning that there are more places to visit.
