Learning Logs
1 - Monitoring Of Progress Log LO 1.1
Strengths:
1-Today I started the scene unit of the diploma. At the moment I am working very quickly in order to get through the researching part of the unit as I find it quite boring and I prefer working on Photoshop as I am very used to it and I like the practical and visual aspect.
2-So far I have one and a half pages on research onto the Southbank and also have added in the URL’s of the sites from which I got the information from so that when it comes to doing a list of Sources it will be quite simple as I do not need to go back and research the places in order to find out where I originally done the research on the different places in the Southbank.
3-Also today I was listening to my music which helps me to focus on my work and also to not listen to what is going on around me
Weaknesses:
1-Today I done the research onto the many different places in the Southbank and I mostly worked well however I have not been writing the research in my own words. I have just been copying and pasting from various site so that I can get through the work quickly. This method was not very good because now it means that I will have to g through the entire document and then change it into my own words.
2-Also when I was listening to music, some of the time I got so focused on the music so much that I temporarily stopped doing the work therefore I did not make the best use of the time allocated to me to do the work
Things to improve and why:
3- Next week I have to make sure that I stay focused for the whole time and maybe not listen to music as sometimes it distracts me however at the same time it blocks out any other background noise therefore I think that the best option is to not listen to it. Another reason why listening to the music could be unproductive is because sometimes I cannot hear what the teacher is saying therefore I could miss out on some important information.
2- Monitoring Of Progress Log LO1/ LO2
Strengths:
1-Today I nearly finished doing the research into the different institutions in the Southbank and have also added pictures. Doing the researching was very time consuming and hard however I have now started the next part of the unit which is called LO1.2 which doing research into the different creative and media roles of employment especially around the Southbank area.
2-I began this unit with a talk from one of the teachers who accompanies us in certain lessons. She was called Miss Dowdy and she talked about some of the different employment roles in the Southbank. This gave me a very good idea about what the creative and media sector was composed of. It is massive and includes anything to do with TV programs or films, acting or even dancing and also everything else which is to do with performing.
Weaknesses:
3-This lesson for the first few minutes was listening to the talk which we were given by Miss Dowdy however I started getting bored therefore I went back to the first unit which was to research some of the different institutions in the Southbank in order to change it fully into my own words therefore I missed some of the important things which she was saying. This was bad because I then had to go and ask somebody in my class what they heard which wasted time and also they could have got it wrong meaning that I would get it wrong
4-Also this week I was not listening t music after the talk meaning that I got distracted easily because many of the people around me were talking and not fully focusing on the work.
Things to improve
1-I have decided that the best way to not get distracted is to listen to music however I must try to focus on my work at the same time. In order to help me do this I will only have my music on quietly and will only listen to music which has small amount lyrics therefore I will not get as caught up with them.
2-I will also try to get to college at least on time, if not early so that can get ahead with the work. Once I have finished all of the set work for scene I will extend all of my analysis of my leaflet and anything else which needs t be done in order to have a high possibility of getting an A*. Also I may make more products than just a leaflet for LO1.4 such as a poster or a tabloid in order to show a complete understanding and an extension of the brief.
3) Monitoring Log LO 1.2/ LO1.3
Strengths
1-I have now finished LO1.2 which is all about the employment roles in the creative and media sector. I worked very quickly and efficiently to complete it. At the moment I am working ahead of schedule and I intend to stay that way. I have gone over all of my work to make sure it is of a high standard and it is in my own words.
2-Near the beginning of this part of the unit (LO 1.3) we went to see Despicable Me in the IMAX cinema. This is the thing that our teachers decided we should develop a personal response for in order to complete LO1.3. Whilst on the trip we took many photographs; some of which I will be able to use in the leaflet which I make in LO 1.4. This will help me to get better grades as I will be using more of my own material rather than just obtaining images from the internet.
3-When I was actually watching Despicable Me I was watching it from an analytical point of view as well as an entertainment view so that my review can be of a higher standard.
4-Before writing the review I done some research into some already existing reviews of the film Despicable Me and then tried to mimic their tone in my own review. This helped it to sound more professional and also to read better. I say this because in many reviews which I have read the tone is boring and too analytical which repels the reader from it therefore I tried to give the opposite effect. I tried to attract the reader and keep them interested by using modern and colourful language and imagery in order to stimulate their imaginations.
5-After I finished the review and checked over it to make sure that it sounded professional I added some effective pictures which depicted what the review was talking about at different points.
Weaknesses
1-When I went to the Southbank and was walking around taking pictures I did not think much about them before I took them. As a result they were not of a high a standard as I would have liked which may cause the standard of the leaflet which I am going to make be lower. In some circumstances just taking a snapshot when you see something interesting is appropriate e.g. pictures for a school newspaper however in this case it is not as I am trying to be as professional as possible.
2-For the second half of our visit to the Southbank I gave the camera to my partner who was in my class to take pictures as I knew that he was a very visual person however I also found out at a later date that he was very lazy and therefore I found out after the trip that he had not taken any pictures which meant that I missed out on many god shots which I could of got.
3-When doing the review itself I did not research some existing reviews first but instead I just went on to do my review in a rush to get it done however the standard of this review was very poor therefore I had t go back and then research before starting the review again which wasted time.
Things to improve
1-In the future I will make sure that I do all of the work set in the specific order so that I do not make the same mistake again and then waste time
2-I will make sure that I do an appropriate amount of research before going on to making/ writing something again so that it can be of high standard straight away
3-I also need to check my work more carefully in order to keep it to a high enough standard
4-In the future whenever I am on an educational trip with the diploma I will always try to focus on my aim in order to get the most from the trip that I can.
5-I will make sure that when I am working in a pair or in a group then I will monitor my partners all of the time so that they don’t get side tracked and stop working so that all of us have a higher chance of getting a good grade.
6-I will make sure that I am making either mental note or a physical note of what is happening at any one time so that I will be able to recall what happened more accurately.
Final Learning Log- LO1.4 and Awareness of the Target audience
Strengths
1-I have now completed the 4 parts of the Scene unit which are LO 1.1, LO 1.2, LO 1.3, LO 1.4
2-I can say that I have mostly worked efficiently and well throughout the course of the Scene unit as I have completed the work at a very high standard even though I have completed the work quite quickly
3-For LO 1.4 I have made a leaflet which looks very professional. Throughout the making of the leaflet I have worked extremely hard to finish it quickly however at the same time I have tried my best to make it look this professional not only by looking at it and adapting it to make it look better but also doing surveys of what people think I need to do in order to improve it. I have asked people from various groups in society in order to get a balanced view/ idea about the things that I needed to adapt or change on my leaflet. The 1st time I changed it after my brother (who is an artist) gave me advice, the second after I done a survey in school and then the last time after getting advice from my teacher.
4-As well as the making of the leaflet for LO 1.4 I have also analysed all of my drafts in order to explain my reasons for making the changes which I have at each stage and also the symbolism of different aspects of the leaflet e.g. having yellow glows around the more important images.
5-I have also analysed a professional leaflet in order to imitate professional techniques in my own leaflet.
Weaknesses
1-During the course of this unit because I have had so much other work to do I have had to balance out the workload however I have not been doing this well. At some times I have been working all on my diploma work and also at sometimes I have just been working on my school work. I have also been wasting a lot of time on games and other things. As a result the standard and the rate of my work have suffered causing me to fall behind in both my school work and also my diploma work.
2-Also because I have worked so long to complete my leaflet at such a high standard it took me a lot longer than many of the other members of my class therefore when I had finally finished it, the class in general had moved on to doing the next thing so I had to catch up. I have only caught up now as I have been getting up early and also staying up late which are likely to have a derogatory effect on the standard of my other work.
Things to improve
1-In order to stay up to date with all of my work in the future I will balance out my diploma work and my other work.
2-I will make sure that I do less relaxing in order to make sure that I stay up to date with all of my work.
3-I will also do more background research into the subjects which I am doing in order to get a better feel of it.
4-During the course of future units I will discuss my ideas with some of the members of the class who also get high results at break time in order to help me get more ideas. This could help all of us to get better results.
Awareness of the target audience
I am aware that my audience is mainly tourists but also anybody who is in the Southbank. I have tried to work on the making of the leaflet with this in mind as these people who the leaflet is supposed to appeal to. I have got feedback about my leaflet from people who are in this category in order to make it more suitable and appealing to them. I have used bright colours in order to make it stand out and have also not used too much typography so that the reader can easily stay interested in the message of what I am trying to say.
Front
The front of this leaflet is very effective as it is very simple but still effectively portrays a message. This is that inside the leaflet the reader will find information about “What’s On,” in the BFI IMAX in October. There is an effective use of colour as the leaflet has a dark theme with only splutters of light reflecting the light off of what could be a blue sun or the Moon off of the splashes of rain. These splashes of rain show that the image on the front of the cover is of a snapshot/ frame in time. This gives the effect of solemnity in the middle of an action scene like in films where something very dramatic or crucial is happening and in order to make this significance be expressed more clearly and effectively the part is slowed down and calm music is playing at the same time. This together with the solemn look on the Owl’s face and the blurry moon effectively conveys intense emotion. This is amplified by the dark background, which causes a large amount of contrast making the main image seem more important. The varying shades of blue covey a sort of mellow sadness which makes a change from the usual image or connotation of an action film which may cause people to think that this film has some sort of deeper meaning than other action films.
There is an effective use of simple typography as there are no modifications made to the text apart from changing the size or the colour. This creates a sense of simplicity and also that the inside of the leaflet will be simple to read which attracts people because it doesn’t hard work to read and understand. Also in this situation the size of the text is symbolic of the importance of it on the front of the leaflet. In this way the title is portrayed as being the most important as it is the biggest and then following it in terms of importance are the words “October,” and “The Biggest Screen in Britain.” October is the least important as it is the same colour and smaller than the title but the words “The biggest screen in Britain,” are quite important as they are not the same colour as the rest of the typography. The yellow/ orange colour is significant as it stands out from everything else because everything else has a white- blue- black colour scheme. Also in the top right corner there are the BFI and IMAX logos in show the reader what organisations are talked about in the leaflet but also to slightly balance out the focus on the front cover as the focus would mainly be on the bottom section as it is where the main image and the typography is.
Back
The back of the leaflet does it’s job very well as it gives lots of information but at the same time it looks very professional and organized. There is a lot of typography however it is arranged in such a way that the reader will not get board reading it. There are two main images; one is one of the top views of the IMAX and the other is of a map of the Southbank. The top view of the IMAX is interesting because you cannot see the whole IMAX and also the photo has not been taken from an interesting angle. This is strange because all of the images of the IMAX which I have seen online are taken at a more interesting angle however, saying this the simplicity of the shot is very unique which make it different and also it fits in the small space where it is at the bottom of the back cover. The typography on the left is the prices for different packages or services, which the IMAX provides e.g. the price of a child ticket, the price of an all-nighter film marathon or the price of an adult ticket at peak time. The titles and sub-titles are all in the yellowy orange colour, which is the same as the front cover for continuity but also to make it stand out from the black background more.
The middle section of the leaflet looks very professional especially because of the image on the left side. Another thing, which gives the leaflet the very professional feel, is the simplicity. The layout is simple with the main image on the left side covering the whole of the left page and also all of the right but it is covered by the text and reviews of the four different films. The text box is a simple rectangle with a smoothed off corner in order to give an edited feel. The text box is also partially transparent in order to faintly show the rest of the image of the two owls. On the right side of the text box are images of the shots from 4 different films, which are Avatar, The Wildest Dream, Despicable Me and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. These help the reader to visualise the kind of films, which are shown in the Southbank. These are all films, which are in different genres, which show the reader that there are films from all different genres, which are shown in the Southbank. They have also been edited in the same way as the text box which they are in, in order to give a sense of continuity. The information next to each image is information about the film, which is shown, on the left such as a review and also when the film will be shown in the IMAX. The image on the left is effective because it is the same kind of yellowy orange as the front cover therefore there is continuity and also it is like gold which could represent how good and precious the IMAX is but then on the front and the back the colour scheme is black and dark blue meaning that inside the IMAX there is joy and happiness but outside there is more sadness and darkness. The owl’s faces are solemn and slightly sad showing that the film is likely to have an in depth story line which is very different to many action films. At the top on the left side there is also the date of when the films will start being shown which is useful because the reader knows straight away the date of when the films will start being shown. As well as the reviews of the films on the right there is also a review of the film, which is pictured on the left and on the front cover in the same sort of text box as on the right.
Leaflet Analysis
My brief for 1.3 of the Scene unit was to make a leaflet inviting people to the Southbank. I have successfully made the leaflet inviting people to the Southbank and will now analyse each part in order to show why I have done certain things and explain the effect that they give.
Front cover - Top

Front cover - Left
This is the middle section of the front cover. The main objective of the typography in this section is to communicate what the leaflet itself is about. I have applied the same layer style to all of the typography and images in order to make them stand out from the background and also to create a sense of continuity. The man on the blue bike is a character from the film “Tron” which was one of the films that the IMAX was showing for a long time as it was a modern remaking of the 1st Tron which was a film about a man who got sucked into the virtual world of computes and then had to find a way out. I have slightly edited the IMAX logo in order to make it tessellate more with the image of the Tron bike. The words “ The eye in the storm of the creative and Media industry of England” is my slogan and basically means that the Southbank is where the creativity and Media of England is at its highest as there is so much in the Southbank. At the bottom is the starry/ smoky background like at the top however this time it is in blue. This is to go along with the colour scheme of the leaflet and also to create contrast between the top of the leaflet and the bottom. I have also added some brushes in order to make it look busier and also to symbolise the music that goes on in the SB in places like the Royal Festival Hall and the Queen Elizabeth Hall as the brushes are actually images of speakers and headphones.
Front cover - Right
This is the right side of the front cover of the leaflet. It is the main image on my front cover as it shows one of the girls in my class posing with one of the many street entertainers on the Southbank. The effect of this image is that the people on the Southbank are happy and also that the street performers make them happy. I have used the picture of this girl because she is a model and so knows how to pose in a way that it is professional. I have edited Mickey Mouse’ blazer so that it goes along with the colour scheme of the leaflet and also used a brush to make his skin clear. Also around this image there is not layer style as the image is so big that it doesn’t need one to stand out but also to make the image stand out from all of the others. BFI stand for “the British Film Institute” and is the organisation that owns and runs the IMAX itself and the image which says “BFI” is their logo. There is also the website at the bottom so that people who read the leaflet can get more information if they want to.
Middle of the Leaflet – Left side
This is the left of the leaflet that I have made. It is the main image that I have put in the middle pages of the leaflet and is of the BFI IMAX which I have also shown with the typography at the bottom. I have used the typography which I have on this page for continuity as I have used the same font on the front cover. I have used the blue and red colour scheme as the colours contrast well however at the same time they don’t clash and look out of place. The red in the title is important on this have also given the title a yellow and black outer glow in order to make it stand out from the background even more. I have given most significant things on the leaflet this same layer style in order to give this same effect but also for continuity throughout the leaflet in order to try and make it look as professional as possible. The blue ladybird decorations are there as they make the leaflet come alive as well as filling the space which would just be blackness. The brush which I have used is effective because it comes out at different angles and sizes therefore every shape is not the same however it is the same kind of thing therefore there is a sense of continuity. I have given the image of the IMAX the significance layer style as it is the main image displaying what the middle of the leaflet is about. The image on the bottom left is the logo of the British Film Institute which owns the IMAX.
Middle of the Leaflet – Right side
This is the right of the leaflet that I have made. At the top I have put the title which is “The Southbank.” This is one of the significant things on the leaflet therefore I have given it along with the text boxes the significance layer style in order to show their importance. Also at the top I have put a general overview of the Southbank in order to give the reader a general overview of what the Southbank actually is. This is in the theme colours of blue and red in order to help bring the leaflet together and connect the many different things in the leaflet together ultimately causing the leaflet to look very professional. Under this section there is a section giving short reviews on some of the films that have or still being shown in the IMAX in order to give the reader of the leaflet an idea about what films are shown in the IMAX. I have not applied the significance layer style because there would be too many significant things on one page causing the significance of the other things to be decreased and also there would be too much yellow and it may make the page look to crowded and busy. I have used the decorations which I have because they give the writing on the page a frame.
Back of the Leaflet
This is the back cover of the leaflet whic I have made. At the top of this page I there is a title whic is “THW SOUTHBANK” This is the 1st thing that the reader will loolk at when they see the back of the leaflet therefoire they will get the message of what the leaflet is about as soon as they look at the leaflet. I have given it the significance layer style except the yellow outter glow is smaller in order t make it seem different from the other significant things in the leaflet to make it stand out more. The rest of the title is saying that there is more in the Southbank than what is in the middle of the leaflet. I have also used the blue and red colour scheme from the rest of the leaflet in the garden/ autumn like decorations and also in the title to make the bacvk come alive and also to give it more dimension other than the black, yellow and white that it would be without it. In the text boxes there is information on three of the main places to visit in th southbank so that the reader may get a general idea about what goes on in order to give them some information directly about what goes on in the Southbank and also to possibly make the reader want to come to the Southbank itself. Also leading on from this there are some directions on how to get to the Southbank by many different method such as by trainb, bus or cycling in order to show the reader how simple it is to get there. I this is not enough information for the reader then therte is also a website at the bottom where they can get more information.
Conclusion
Overall I am very pleased with the leaflet which I have created as it looks very professional and I have met the brief well. I think that I used my time quite well even though it took me so long to create the leaflet as the leaflet is of an extremely high quality and therefore I am hoping to get the most marks possible for it.
Draft Analysis- First Idea
In the first draft of my leaflet I have quite a cartoony theme in or to make it seem like the Southbank is a happy place so that it will stick out and be contrasting to the other leaflets that are also on the shelves as they are usually a bit dark, look strange or are just boring. I have used the London Eye as it is very iconic of the Southbank Centre therefore people will know what the leaflet is about straight away. The title is “the Southbank” but is continued to be “in the Heart of London,” in order to show how the Eye is at the Centre of British culture. I have also added some symbols of Britain such as the Red Bus and the Zebra crossing in order to enforce the point of British culture. There is also a heart rate monitor line going round the edge in order to enforce the fact that the Southbank is in the heart of London.
This is middle of the 1st draft of my leaflet. I have lots of text on the left side in order to give the reader lots of information about the Southbank (SB). The title, which is “THE SOUTHBANK A HIVE OF EXCITEMENT,” is there to make the reader want to read more about the SB and find out why it is a hive of excitement. There is an advertisement on the leaf side of the leaflet for a competition of some kind, which makes the reader want to get involved more. The image of The London Eye in the corner is for continuity from the front and the image of a girl with a street entertainer shows how the SB is a happy place.
This is the back and it is very basic in order to give a simple feel to the Southbank however at the same time there is the head of Charlie Chaplain sitting on top of the IMAX which is like his collar which is a bit mind boggling however it still looks effective. I have used this specific typography in order to appeal to the younger audience as it is exclaiming colloquial language. I have put my made up company name at the bottom in order to give a bit of a sense of professionalism with the leaflet and also to make it look a bit more complete.
Second Idea
This is my second idea for the leaflet and I think that it looks or will look more professional than my 1st idea as there is a main image, a few small side images and then also a simple but effective title. The title is at the top in order to show that it is very important together with the Tron bike and the BFI logo. The main image is effective because it is of a happy looking Mickey Mouse (which is actually a street performer) standing with a happy looking Asian boy. This shows the ethnic diversity of London and in particular the Southbank. I have used some decorations in order to fill in the blank space and also to make it look busier.
This is the middle of the second draft of the leaflet and I think that it will look very effective when and if I use this draft in my final leaflet. The main title which is on the left side shows what the double page spread is about. The three exclamation marks after “THE IMAX,” shows that The IMAX is exciting and fun. The main image in the leaflet is of the IMAX itself in order to further show what the double page spread is about as some people may have not hared of or seen the IMAX. I have the word “FILM” in order to fill in the spaces and also to show that the IMA is all about films as it has the biggest screen in Britain. On the right side is information about the Southbank itself and also a few reviews of a couple of the films which are shown in the Southbank to give the reader a further idea about the style of films which are shown in the IMAX.
This is the back of the leaflet which doesn’t look as good as the front or the middle as it looks a bit messy and won’t be suitable for people of all ages which is my target audience. The title shows that there is “even MORE,” in the SB than the IMAX which is the impression that some people may have got from the middle of my leaflet. There is a weird looking smiley face at the top to show how the SB is very different from any other place in the world. I have added a small review of many of the other major places to see in the SB in order to give the reader a wider feel of what the SB is. There is also a website at the bottom so that the reader can get more information if the want.
Idea 2 Coloured
I have chosen the second draft of my leaflet and have now added the colours. It is now looking more professional and the colours work well together. The title is now black with yellow shading behind it in order to make it stand out. I have chosen a blue and red colour scheme in order as there is a lot of contrast between these 2 colours. I have also added a bit of black in order to crate even more contrast and in order to make Mickey Mouse look very different. He is wearing a suit and tie in order to make him look very different from usual which shows how the SB is different from usual. His tie and the clothes of the boy are also the blue and red colour scheme for continuity. The decorations are the fade in the specific colours in order to show that there is a lot of art in the SB.
I have chosen the second draft of my leaflet and have now added the colours, which look very effective especially on the IMAX as they make it look a bit 3D or like it is coming out from the page. The decorations made from the word “FILM” are now aligned in order to give a sense of organisation in the SB and also to make it look more uniform. I have used the blue and red colour scheme on this part of the leaflet for continuity and also to make the leaflet more alive than just a normal one coloured background. On the right I have now coloured the images from the films and have added some blue and red decorations to make the leaflet look busier.
I have chosen the second draft of my leaflet and have now added the colours. I have now made the text boxes look more presentable and have put a better looking frame around the edge. I have also coloured the boxes in order to the different feels so that they are not all the same. I have also coloured half of the weird smiley in blue and half of it red in order to show the cultural diversity and the massive amount of things to do in the SB.
The Front - Photoshop drafts
This is my 1st draft of the leaflet, which I have made on Photoshop. I have decided to do a black background as it looks very different from many of the leaflets, which are currently in the SB at the moment. I know this as I have gone there and I have collected many leaflets myself. The title fades from blue to white in order to make it stand out from the background a lot. Behind the title there are some stars which I have made out of an image of the London Eye. I was going to use the London Eye as my main image however I thought that it would look too much like some already existing leaflets and I would like my leaflet to be very different from these ones. I have put “JAN- MARCH 2010” as this is the time frame, which I would like people to come to the SB. I have used an image of the Tron bike from an advert for the film Tron. This looks very effective and gives the leaflet a slightly futuristic feel. I have used an image of a young Asian boy posing with a street performer however the street performer is in a Panda costume however it still looks effective as I have made the eyes blue together with the boy’s face for continuity. I have made his once colorful jumper black and white in order not to distract from the colour scheme. I have also added some blue decorations, which are of various speakers and sound waves in order to show the very exciting atmosphere of the SB but also so that the leaflet appeals to younger people as many young tourists go to the SB.
This is my second draft and I think that there is a massive difference from the 1st draft. The main difference is that the title is bigger to show that it is more important and also that many o0f the important things have a yellow glow around them to maker them stand out from the black background. I have also added the IMAX logo which is normally this coulor underneath the Tron bike in order to show that the film Tron is shown in the IMAX. I have also changed the main image to one of a young girl and the original Mickey Mouse idea that I had. I done this because the girl is attractive therefore more people are likely to pick up the leaflet and then read it than if it was the old image of the panda and boy. I have used a blue gradient in order to change the normal colours of the girl and street entertainer into the kind of turquoise-blue colour scheme, which I have in the other parts of the front of the leaflet. I done this also because when it was in normal coulor it stuck out from the background too much and looked like a different style to the background. For the decorations in the place of the many different brushes which have a speaker theme I have put only 2 in a vivid yellow colour so that there is more yellow on the leaflet because without it only the outer glows on the different images is yellow. I also chose yellow because it has more contrast with the black background then the same brushes but in blue.
Before I done the third draft I done a survey to ask people what they thought that my leaflet needed in order to look more effective or professional. I noticed that when I asked someone who done some sort of art or worked on Photoshop they said that it was fine as it was and that I shouldn't change it. I also found that the other people, who were the people that weren’t really visual artists, thought that it needed more colour in order to come alive more because at the time it looked too flat or 2D. I personally thought that it looked finished however the people who I asked could be in my target audience therefore I listened to them and changed my leaflet to make it more colourful. Also my teacher who is very visual decided that it looked very good however it did look a bit 2d therefore I should add more colour therefore this is what I have done for the front cover. I only done this to the front cover as at this stage I had only done the front cover and decided that I wouldn't do the middle or the back until it was nearly done so that I could fully establish a suitable style so then I could do them quite quickly.
This is the 3rd draft of the front cover of my leaflet. The only changes that I have made except the colours are the that there are rays of light coming down from the top right hand corner, I have made the main image of Mickey Mouse and the girl bigger and that I have added some more speaker brushes in the bottom left hand corner. The rays give the effect that the SB is something almost heavenly or magnificent. These fade out into the black background so that there is a smooth transition between the red and the black. If the red just ended then it would make it look a bit more amateur and it wouldn’t fit in with the style of the piece. I have put in two more speaker brushes so that there are four therefore I can use the new colour scheme of red, light blue, purple and green more. I have made this my new colour scheme as it creates a sense of carnival and also it makes the cover a bit more varied which greatly contrasts to my last draft. I have used this colour scheme with the title, the BFI logo and the IMAX logo. All of this creates a great sense of continuity and also crosslink’s between the different images in on the front of the leaflet. I have made the image of the Mickey Mouse bigger to make it seem more important and also to make the cover seem more crowded to show how bustling with life the SB is. I have made it normal colour so that it fits with the rest of the colour but also because when I done a survey of what I needed to do to the leaflet to make nit look more professional many people said that this image should be in normal colour as it would be better if we clearly saw the girls face and also the actual details of Mickey Mouse. I also took the yellow outer glow off of this image so that it sticks out from the others because if there were too much outer glows then it makes the images seem less important as everything has one.
The Middle
This is my 1st draft of the leaflet, which I have made on Photoshop. Doing the middle of the leaflet was very hard as it was very hard to find a suitable picture therefore I spent a long time on this and then found that this picture would be most suitable even though I would have to edit it a lot in order to get rid of the iPhone advert on the front. There is a black background in this middle section of the leaflet for continuity because there is also a black background on the front however the black is very effective as it makes all that is put in front of it seem more important as there is a high level of contrast between it and then anything else which is out in front of it. Another use for the black is to fill the empty space because if it was white then it would look empty and look like it would need to be filled but then the middle pages would look too busy which may discourage the reader from reading it. I have placed four images from very different films onto the left side so that I can write about them but also to show the reader an example of some of the genres of films which they could see in the Southbank. They and the text boxes are angled in this way in order to give a sense of freedom and unrestraint, but also to make my leaflet seem very different from most of the other leaflets which are trying to portray the same message. I have used the colours which I have for the title for continuity as red and blue are my colour scheme on the front cover and also the font is the same because it creates a sense of continuity and also it is very professional.
This is my second Photoshop draft and it immediately looks much better than my first draft. The main differences in this draft are that I have added yellow outer glows to the text boxes and main image and also that I have positioned the text boxes and images horizontally which is the way which we normally read therefore it will be easier for the reader to read the text. The organisation is also better as the text boxes are put in such a way that they fit together better therefore I can make them bigger in order to put in more text. This will be an asset because I will be able to give the reader more information which could make them want t come to the Southbank even more and also the organised feel portrays a sense of professionalism. I have used a yellow outer glow because yellow is a bright colour which has connotations of happiness and joy therefore it is portraying the message that the Southbank is a joyful place and therefore a good place to be. It’s visual advantage is that it makes the image of the IMAX stand out more as the edges of it used to be black which is the same colour as the background therefore there was little contrast.
This is my third Photoshop draft of the middle of the leaflet and it is now looking quite professional however it is still partially unfinished. After trying to edit the iPhone advert off of the IMAX but still keep the metal structure on the outside of the IMAX for a long period of time I decided that I was not working productively enough therefore I decided to move onto the right side of the leaflet whereupon I found an image of Batman with bars coming down in front of him looking over a city which I eventually decided to use to layer over the exiting image of the IMAX. By doing this I cut out a lot of work and at the same time created an effective looking image of the IMAX which is also useful because it fits with the blue/ red colour scheme therefore I did not need to edit it much. On the right side of the leaflet I have added some film reviews into the boxes so that the reader can get an idea about the type of films which are shown in the Southbank. I have chosen the selection of films which I have in order to show that there are many different genres of films all suitable for different ages which are shown in the IMAX therefore the overall target audience of the IMAX is everybody. I have also added some decorations along the edges in order to frame the text boxes and images which make the page look more busy which represents how busy the Southbank really is. They are not very big so that they don’t distract from the main focus of this section which is the image of the IMAX and the reviews and also they are in the theme colours which are blue and red for continuity.
The Back
Of the three parts of the leaflet; the front the middle and the back, the back was by far the easiest to do as there was a specific brief for what was supposed to be on the back and also because of the generally slow which I have been working at most people are way into the production of their back cover therefore there is a lot from which I can be inspired and given ideas about my own back cover.
This is my 1st draft of the back cover on Photoshop and at first glance it looks quite effective however at the same time it looks very unprofessional especially because of the stars. At the top is the title which is “THE SOUTHBANK,” which is in quite a large block font to make it stand out more and therefore seem more significant/ important. It is also in the theme blue and red colours of my leaflet however this time the text itself s not blue and red but rather it is red and white with a blue outer glow in order to slightly vary the design but keep the same elements. I have kept the same constant black background for continuity but also to create a high amount of contrast with the red stars and their blue outer glows. I have made the stars go down diagonally in order to give a sense of organisation as the stars are not everywhere but then at the same time they are in small strips which look effective. I have also given the text boxes a blue outer glow to make them stand out from the background and then a red inner glow in order to keep the red and the blue together which they are all of the other parts of this cover. The box at the bottom is different in size and alignment to the other boxes because unlike the other text boxes it will a box of directions to the Southbank whereas the other boxes will be a short summary of what goes on in the different main attractions in the Southbank.
This is the second draft of my back cover and it is a great improvement from the last draft as the title has been changed and also I have taken out the stars together with all of the red and blue inner and outer glows. I have changed the title and the whole top section to a more red and turquoise colour as these are the same two colours that I have used in the theme for the middle and the front sections. I went against the red and white title because there was not enough continuity with the middle section. I have also added a yellow outer glow in order to create more contrast between the title and the background especially with all of the autumn decorations around it. The gradient which I have used for the title is effective because it gives all of the letters a uniform look and as there is a smooth transition between the colours it still looks professional. This is because on professional leaflets the letters, in a word especially the title usually all of the typography is one colour and it is never one colour suddenly changing to another. I have now started adding in the reviews of some of the main places in the Southbank in order to give the reader some information on what they can actually do in the Southbank besides going to the BFI IMAX. Around the text boxes I have added a yellow outer glow in order to make them seem not so sharp but also to make them stand out because everything around them is busy/ exciting. The colour yellow is very suitable for this use as I have not used it anywhere else on the back cover therefore it will stand out more and also this is my theme. By this I mean that in most situations if something is important then I have given it a yellow outer glow throughout and this applies to the whole leaflet e.g. the image of the IMAX in the middle or the title on the front cover.
This is my third draft on Photoshop and there has been much improvement from the last draft. The major thing which I have done in order to make the leaflet look more professional is take out the big white decorations which were taking up too much space therefore meaning that there was not enough space for the images of the institutions themselves (which I have not added in yet). They were also not in any way in the colour scheme however even when I put them in the colour scheme by making some of them red and some blue they still looked out of place and unprofessional. In the place of them I have added some garden like decorations above the text box which gives directions to the Southbank. These are more suitable as they are not taking up space which is going to be used for anything else. I have used various brushes in order to create this garden like scene and also a leaf brush in order to create the leaves at the top. On this page I have made all of the decorations symmetrical in order to make the leaflet look more attractive but also to give the feel that the blue and the red are opponents like the good and the bad. This is shown by the fact that there is basically a mirror line in the middle of the leaflet and the decorations on each side are a mirror image of each other. At the bottom of the garden decorations there is a yellow strip which is like the soil in a way but also to show that yellow is the same on both sides of the mirror therefore it is constant even throughout the rest of the leaflet as the thing that is symbolic of importance/ significance. I have now added the directions to get to the Southbank e.g. by bus, train, bike or walking. Next to the directions there is a map of the Southbank which the reader can use in order to help find their way around the Southbank which is good because it may make their time in the Southbank better as they are less likely to get lost. I have now added to the title in order to make it “And that’s not all that the Southbank has to offer. There’s more!!!” I have added this because after reading the middle page the reader may think that the IMAX is the main place to visit in the Southbank therefore I am showing them that “There’s more,” in the Southbank meaning that there are more places to visit.
